Youth Academy FAQ's
Why are there pools instead of separate teams?
A pool of players gives the coaches an opportunity to develop healthy competition between players without judgment. A player between the ages of 7-10 is not going to be the same player at 14-18. We want our young players to feel special and confident while they are figuring out what kind of player they are trying to aspire to be on the soccer field.
The pool system gives the club the best opportunity to form a strong team at the U11 age group. At the younger ages soccer is not a team sport but rather a time for children to develop their individual relationship with the ball. Players become familiar with one another and the training teaches consistency. While we understand each player is different, we would like players to gain an understanding of the same soccer principles so they can be strong as a team.
How much travel is involved?
There is minimal travel involved for the Youth Academy. We usually participate in one overnight event in the Bay Area. Most games, play days, jamborees and tournaments will be played in the greater Sacramento region
How many games are played in the season?
CASA would like to have players participate in 20-25 official games or “cup matches.” We advocate and push unlimited playground games such as free plays, play days and jamborees. We don’t want to focus on scores or standings but rather promote fun games to develop good soccer habits. Competition will arise within the players as a natural consequence once games start.
What is periodization and is there any time off during the year?
We encourage time off from soccer and have a calendar that sets days off for family vacation and for other interests. We would like our players to “miss” the game, so they come back eager to play and ready to embrace it.
How much time is devoted to practices and training?
On average, practices are twice a week for 1 1/2 hours a day. We use small-sided games such as 1 v 1, 3 v 3 and 5 v 5 to teach topics and practices technical drills. CASA staff coaches use the Best Practices for Coaching Soccer in the United States as a guideline. Practices will be held at Larchmont Community Park.
Are there additional camps or training available?
All players are invited to 1 ½ hours training session for five consecutive days for an intensive training camp with CASA coaches at no additional charge. Training takes place in the morning during the summer time and introduces our young Boca players to the foundation of our playing philosophy.
