Coaches Corner: Academy Teams
|
|
Berhane Andeberhan, Technical Director
Our goal is to become not only a genuine club but a unique academy where the players do not have to pay to play. The first giant step in that direction is being taken by CASA as our top boys' and girls' teams have been designated to operate the next season under the new arrangement! The players on those teams will not have to pay the membership and coaching fees.
Formation of Teams & Fees
The teams will participate in CYSA and US Club sanctioned events and so tryouts will be according to the established guidelines that all our teams follow. Once selected, players will not be required to pay club membership and coaching fees. The only fees will be the nominal fees for registration with CYSA and US Clubs. For travel and other expenses, fund raising efforts will be made so that minimal expenses will come from the players and their families directly. Fund raising will be conducted as a team effort and will help reduce the cost of travel.
Coaching
The coaching program will be designed and conducted by the CASA coaching staff according to the Best Practices for Coaching Soccer suggested by the Coaching Department of US Soccer. The quality and intensity of training will require a greater commitment from the players and coaches. Great attention will be put on periodization, so that in addition to intense training there will be ample opportunities for regeneration, free time and vacations.
Competition
Greater emphasis will be put on special events including some of the top College Showcase events in addition to their participation in some of the local leagues and tournaments. It is also hoped that these teams will be able to participate in overseas training and competition.
Commitment
Players must commit to a higher level of training and must agree to honor all the requirements of the team. Plans for training, tournaments and special events will be made well in advance with full input of parents and coaches. Great care will also be taken to make sure the players academic interests are respected. Players must commit to the program without exceptions. Participation in all outside soccer activities must have prior approval of the coaching staff.
Academic Support
While there will not be any academic criteria for belonging to the academy, the club is committed to motivating and assisting all the members of the academy to maintain and/or upgrade their academic profiles. Academic advisement including tutoring and orientation programs will be provided. Information such as how to prepare for college and specific professions will be an integral part of such a program. For such support the club will reach out to universities and other external resources to serve the needs of the players.
College Choice
Players will be expected to keep up their studies and a greater effort will be made to monitor their progress and help prepare them to make their college choices whether they intend to play in college or not. Specific programs to support and promote the players' academic excellence will be planned by the club while at home as well as when traveling. While it is hoped that many will command college scholarships, a great effort will be made to make sure that their academic future is well served as they enjoy participation in college soccer. The goal is to maximize their opportunities to pursue their chosen professions while keeping the possibility of playing soccer at higher levels alive.
Professional Prospects
The added intensive training and discipline is expected to maximize the chances of some of the players to enter professional soccer. The club will do its utmost to advance the interests of the players including preserving their college eligibility in the event the professional opportunities do not pan out. If players are approached by professional teams, they must notify the club before taking any steps. For those that do end up on professional teams the club will help them to acquire proper representation.

Youth Academy News
|
|
Brandon Cavitt, Director
It is really nice to see all the teams coming back out to Larchmont Park to practice and to fellowship with one another. Our coaches are very excited to begin another year of the Boca Skills Academy. The 1st training session will begin April 7th from 5:30pm-7pm at Larchmont Park for U8-U14 Boys and Girls and will continue until May 19th.
We welcomed all the new members to the Boca family at our Town Hall Meeting at the Mather Sports Complex on March 31st. Youth Academy coaches met with their individual teams right after the Town Hall Presentation.
On the horizon, we have many teams gearing up to participate in the Nor Cal Premier Spring League. Please make sure coaches and managers read over the Schedule Steps and Responsibilities for Nor Cal. The steps can be located at the link at the end of this article.
We look forward to seeing all of the young Boca players on the 7th.
GO Boca!!!!

Boca Jrs 89 Boys
LAS VEGAS, NV -- The CASA Boca Jrs 89 (U18) Boys participated in the Las Vegas Mayor's Cup over President's weekend. The boys played in the adidas Gold bracket and faced teams from Canada, Las Vegas, Cal-South & Colorado. They started the weekend off with a 9-0 win against the NVLV Strikers. Next up were the Nanaimo UVI Gunners from Canada. This game turned out to be the toughest of the weekend. The Canadian team was big and physical. Boca was forced to adjust their game to 1 & 2 touch passing. By winning the majority of the 50-50 balls and creating attacking opportunities with 1 & 2 touch passes Boca was able to come away with a 1-0 win. The 3rd game in the flight matched up the two undefeated teams from Saturday. The Randolph Rangers from Cal-South were no match for Boca, and the game was played in the attacking half for most of the 70 minutes. The final score was 2-0.
Winning the flight with a 3-0 record put Boca in the semi-finals to face another Cal-South team. The Burbank Red Machine tested the Boca defense with their speed up top and the long ball. The defense was forced to run down several 1V1 situations. With the help from some great goalkeeping, stellar defending and quick counter attacks, Boca was able to come away with a 1-0 win.
The Championship game was against the Corinthians from Colorado. This game turned out to be very physical with the majority of play in the first half taking place in the middle of the field. The second half was a different story. The Boca defense prevented the Corinthians from creating any real scoring opportunities. With their quick counter attacks, Boca was able to maintain possession and create some nice scoring opportunities. Boca was able to put one in the back of the net with 15 minutes left. With the game winding down, the Corinthians became desperate and started throwing everyone forward. Once again the defense and the goalie stepped up their level of play and kept the ball out of the net. With the final whistle, Boca was able to say they finished the weekend with a record of 5-0 and never conceding a goal!!!!
Coach Gary Messing stated, "I was very pleased with the excellent play of the boys and their composure when some of the games were on the verge of getting out of control due to the frustration of our opponents."
GREAT JOB BOCA!!
